1. Don’t think of working out as an “option.”
The first and most important obstacle to conquer if you want to get and stay in shape is to stop negotiating the issue of exercise. Devoting a small portion of each day to fitness is not a luxury but a MUST– the same way you brush your teeth or take a shower!! No negotiations-and I mean that. Really absorb this truth!!
If you don’t bathe or brush your teeth people will avoid you! If you don’t work out, you’ll avoid your “self.” What do I mean? You won’t love yourself, feel good about yourself, have confidence in yourself–and worse, your health will suffer!! Make an appointment with yourself every day where you devote a non-negotiable short block of time to exercise. And it can be only 16-18 minutes a day of weight training! More about this later.
2. Work out at Home!Joining a fitness club is the easy part--getting there is the killer. But even worse than having laid down your money, is refusing to "cut your losses" and simply work out at home. People give up and do nothing because you every time they remember they paid money and didn’t go, they punish themselves further and do NOTHING. Don’t fall into this trap! Cut your losses and work out at home!
A Stanford University study of 350 men and women ranging in age from 50 to 65 randomly assigned participants to work out either at home or in a fitness facility. After two years, it was discovered that those who worked out at home actually did work out, while a significant number of the "gym-goers" dropped out. So work out at home and save time and money and guess what? You will be more likely to actually do it!!
3. Be Patient…you were not in a Hurry when Getting Out of Shape!What happens if you've started a workout program, and it's already two weeks, but you're not seeing a thing! If you are working out with weights, in time, muscles will be created--and those muscles will tighten, tone and define your body--and raise your metabolism. Some body parts take longer than others but KEEP GOING. It didn’t take two days to get you into the out of shape condition you are now– so give it time.
Were you in a rush when you were neglecting your body? Did you say “Why didn’t I gain more weight this week? “Why didn’t my thighs get flabbier this week? No. You blissfully enjoyed your life. You had all the time in the world. But now that you’re working out you’re watching ever second to see results. Calm down. Relax. Give it time.
4. Have a plan B.If you have a plan B, nothing can stop you! Say your alarm clock doesn't go off and you will be late for work so you can’t do your morning workout. No problem if you have a Plan B.
Your plan B which you thought out ahead of time may be to hit the weights the moment you walk in the door after work. Figure one out that works for you. Nothing can stop you if you are bound and determined to do it--if you believe in your heart of hearts that this is something that will greatly benefit you.
5. Don’t let your “Mood” Rule you!Turn off your brain, and by an act of will, and just start the workout. Once you get started, three minutes into the workout, your energy level and mood will pick up. A few minutes later, you'll forget yourself and go through your workout. By the time you've finished, you'll be looking at the world through rose-colored glasses.
When you exercise, the endorphins kick in! We used to think it was just from aerobic activities that you got this high but we now know that weight training can be as effective as anti-depressants!
6. Don’t Be so Hard on YourselfSay you missed a workout! Instead of attacking yourself and calling yourself lazy and hopeless, tell yourself, “I’m only human. I give myself credit for trying. One mistake does not mean I’m finished.” Then start again! And when you do your workout the next day, congratulate yourself! And the next time you’re tempted to skip a workout. Remember how great you feel and how proud of yourself you are later inn the day! Do this day after day and hey, your body will be in shape.
7. Do a Shorter Workout!If you commit to doing a shorter workout that works– you’ll actually do it and see some changes. On the other hand, if you’re determined to punish yourself and commit to working out for hours a day, you won’t do it and see no results. Better to do something every day than beat yourself up for not working out.
You can tone your whole body in 16-18 minutes a day working out with weights the right way!! The secret is to cut your resting times– and you burn more fat that way too! I can show you how. My workouts are very short because I’m very lazy!! But look at the shape I’m in at 63. None of my photos are touched up. If I can do it you can do it too!!
THE NEW BOOTCAMP WORKOUT
You don’t have to join my Boot camp to do my new Boot camp workout! But I want to convince you to join for other reasons. More about that in a minute.
Here it is: my brand new "Joyce's Boot camp" workout using all 17 of my DVDS. It's updated and efficient and will cause your body to get into amazing shape in 6 weeks. If you can't afford to get all 17 get as many as you can and keep repeating those weeks. But for maximum progress it pays to mix it up to the max.
THE NEW JOYCE'S BOOTCAMP 6 WEEK WORKOUT PLAN
Week 1:
Day 1. Weight Training made Easier day one.
Day 2. Weight training made Easier day 2.
Day 3. Quick Quartet Upper.
Day 4. Quick Quartet Lower and middle.
Day 5. The fat burning workout upper body.
Day 6. The fat burning workout lower and middle body.
Day 7. Easy Does it Stretch.
Note: On each workout day before you do anything else you do the JUST ABS day for that day. There are six days so it works out perfectly. Then you can either do the ABS included if it is for that day in addition to the ABS or just leave them out. Your choice. THIS APPLIES TO ALL SIX WORKOUT WEEKS.
Week 2:
Day 1. Bottoms up upper.
Day 2. Bottoms Up lower and middle.
Day 3. Slow Duet upper.
Day 4. Slow duet lower and middle.
Day 5. Bathing suit Workout.
Day 6. Vertical Fat Zapping workout-all.
Day 7. interval aerobics.
Week 3:
Day 1. Definition upper.
Day 2. Definition lower and middle.
Day 3. Gut love handle pooch busters.
Day 4 Speedy non stop upper.
Day 5. Speedy Non stop lower and middle and Easy does it.
Day 7. interval aerobics.
Week 4:
Day 1. Just arms and Just bra roll-boobs.
Day 2. Just thighs and Just butt.
Day 3. Bone upper.
Day 4. Bone lower and middle.
Day 5. Interval aerobics.
Day 6. Slow and steady 1234 all.
Day 7. Interval aerobics.
Week 5:
Day 1. Fast forward cycles I and II.
Day 2. Fast Forward. cycles III and extra ABS.
Day 3. Bathing suit workout.
Day 4. Dynamic Tension the whole tape.
Day 5. Easy Does it.
Day 6. Non stop the whole tape.
Day 7 Easy Does it.
Week 6:
Day 1. On the ball upper.
Day 2. On the ball lower and middle.
Day 3. Speedy non stop upper.
Day 4. Speedy non stop lower and middle.

Day 6. Top shape lower and middle.

I was using “just arms” this morning and I can really feel and see the difference. In January, at the age of 49, I’ll be wearing a strapless wedding gown –– neither of us have been married before. And you know, he almost didn’t ask me out two years ago because he thought I was a lot younger than him! (He is actually 6 months younger than I am.) Thanks to you, I am going to look really great on my wedding day –– so you have given me one of my best wedding presents so far J love you, too –– and Marthe –– the videos of you two together remind me of when I was a teen and my mother and I would exercise together.

I am 51 years old and have been in decent shape my entire life. I did the Jane Fonda thing, etc etc--you should see all the videos I have in my workout room in my basement!! I was never very athletic but I did manage to do the tapes and stay in shape. During the last few years though I have "fallen off the treadmill" occasionally and my waist and stomach have definitely gone by the wayside! :-) Last year I noticed the bra roll and felt so much older than I always have!! It finally hit me--I am older and I have to work at it because I will get all those "things" that I've heard about. And never having had a weight problem it was hard to take when I realized I kept gaining weight--I need to lose about 15 lbs.
Anyway I am so thankful I saw your website and noticed the bra roll workout-- I said yes--that is me! Finally a regular workout--hard work -but -not dancey and so difficult that you give up doing it because you are discouraged---thank you for realizing there are "regular people" out there!! Thank you! Thank you! Thank You. And you are so motivating and "regular". It is so nice to hear your daughter count while you give your motivational tips--I just finished the just bra rolls and your ab workout and what a workout! And in your ab workout you are counting too so I can keep count too I am so happy I bought these tapes. I bought the "Just Joyce" series and am anxious to do the rest of the tapes.
Joyce, I can't thank you enough for putting me back on the motivational track. I do try to work out every day but I do get discouraged by some of the trainers and how fast they do them and then I stop doing them for a while.
I did your bra roll workout last Wednesday and decided today (Saturday) to get off my duff and do it again along with the ab workout! I actually was looking forward to doing them and I'm sooo glad I did! You are in such fantastic shape and you are soooooooo nice! I can't tell you enough how great your exercises are. I've been working out for 2 months and 3 weeks and what a difference it has made. I've already started to get a waist back and my butt isn't sagging as much as it did. Your workouts are great and I really appreciate the good exercises you have produced.

Just thought I'd write you a little progress report. Tomorrow will have been two months since I began the workout and "diet" (I say that loosely because it has been so approximate... and yet under control). I began at about 185 pounds and today I stepped on the scales to see 162.5! That’s all well and good, but the part I have really been following is my reflection in the mirror and the comfortable pants I've been wearing. Now I am close to having gone down two sizes. You know how good that feels. I like the person in the mirror again, I even know her. I really look forward to my workouts, and your upbeat attitude and humor. On occasion I have not been able to do everything as planned, but I just get back with it and it's all good. If anybody asks me what I have been doing I am just going to tell them how to find your website. It's all there. Thanks so much for what you do, and have done.

Joyce, I wanted to say thank you for your excellent program, "Weight Training Made Easy". Six years ago, after knee surgery (an ACL reconstruction) I couldn't run any more, and was very depressed about it. In rehab, we were using weights, and I remember asking the physical therapist, "Do women lift weights?!?!" *grin* She assured me they do..........I find your excellent work out, started with 2 lb. dumb bells, and am now using 15 lb. dumb bells............and have never felt better in my life!!! Thank you for a wonderful addition to my wellness program!!

I wanted to thank you for your inspirational books and videos. I didn't realize how important it is to follow your programs and eat properly until a few days ago. Last Wednesday my mother-in-law, who doesn't eat right or exercise, had a heart attack and had to undergo emergency bypass surgery. While waiting for her to come out of the surgery I realized that I wasn't just losing some weight and gaining muscle, but I was truly improving my entire life. I now know that the changes I've made may prevent me from having surgery or going on a medication. I now feel that not only can I reach my goal of getting back into a size 8, but I can live a long and healthy life also.
Alicia I've had a copy of your book Top Shape for about 10 years. I recommended it to a 72-year-old friend of mine about a year ago. Through him alone, in a couple of months, I think 5-7 more copies had been bought. And he wasn't TRYING to sell it. It was spread by word of mouth. This man's friends, family, and even his cardiologist bought copies of the book. I think there are a lot of potential sales on this book. Is it being promoted?

I think your workouts (which I've used for ten years) have had a life changing effect for me. I have been doing your workouts for years, and love my results. People can't believe it when they hear how old I am. Maureen an acquaintance suggested your “Bone building body shape work book” over 2 years ago at a ladies retreat. What attracted me to her recommendation was that you could work out in 10 minutes a day. I can’t believe the results I have obtained over these past 2 years.
My rheumatologist told me I was his “poster child”. I am 52 years old and I can inline skate, cross country ski, hike, horseback ride and bike without being ““laid up the next day’’ by these activities because your workouts do strengthen. It does take commitment to do it daily but the pay off is tremendous. (I admit there were some 2 –– 4 week stretches I did not do them however, when I resumed –– my strength was still there)
Three weeks ago, my 82 year old mother moved in with me, from an assisted living facility she resided in for 4 years, because she just stopped wanting to participate in going down for meals, activities and exercises- she also used a walker for long distances. I started utilizing the arm exercises along with the leg exercises and in three weeks she actually went to a wedding without the walker! (She started using one over 2 years ago) I just had to tell you the Bone Building workout book has been a miracle to my mom, friends, and myself. I have even brought the book to a ladies retreat with exercise demonstration to show them how really time friendly and body strengthening the workbook exercises are. Thank you Joyce!! I just had to tell you.

Today marks the end of the 2nd week, actually and I took a pair of pants out of my drawer this morning that I haven't worn since probably last spring and they fit perfect: not tight! The pants I have been wearing are also getting kind of big. I have to tell you also, how much I am enjoying the workouts and the new DVD's. Before I had only done the Non-Stop with a video and Definition with the book, and a lot of it and it is nice to have the variety. Nice is too mild- it's a whole world better to have the variety. Plus, I love your attitude and zest! It's so refreshing. I really look forward to exercising now.

It is not only AOL and earthlink. If you have not heard from me in more than a week something is wrong. ANSWERED PRAYERS
I was having money problems and couldn’t meet my bills. I prayed and God started showing me how to cut down– I cut my phone bill by getting rid of services I didn’t need– I cut my cable way down, I started looking at food prices more carefully, I stopped smoking and wow–my monthly bills are down by $300.00. Thank God for answered prayers.

I had gotten addicted to sleeping pills. When I tried to say to myself I wouldn’t take one, all day long I would be obsessed with it– it ruled my life. Finally I prayed and asked God to deliver me. Then I got this idea. Put the sleeping pills out in the shed– so if you want them, you will have to go through a pain to get them– out into the cold. Long story short–it’s been 3 months and I have not taken one. The best result of it all is I feel so much less “dopey” during the day and I’m less depressed.

I needed a job because my husband’s money was just not cutting it– yet I wanted to be home when the children got home from school. People kept telling me, “Work in a bank– or try the local supermarket.” That idea depressed me. So I prayed and the next thing you know my neighbor told me about a school aid job! Perfect. And I love being around children. It is such a blessing.
